Warwick RI Roofer RTP Roofing Outlines Ice Dam Causes and Roof Replacement Timing

Warwick, United States - October 18, 2026 / RTP Roofing /

WARWICK, R.I. - With cold weather approaching, RTP Roofing, a roofing contractor based in Warwick, is encouraging Rhode Island homeowners to look at their roofs now, while conditions are mild, instead of after the first snow.

"The condition of the roof matters more than the calendar," said an RTP Roofing spokesperson. "A roof that is leaking or failing across several slopes is a reason to act now."

Start with the attic, not the shingles. RTP Roofing's published guidance explains that ice dams form when snow sits on the roof, the upper roof surface is warmed above 32 degrees Fahrenheit by heat escaping the attic, and the lower roof edge stays at or below freezing. Meltwater then refreezes at the eave, backs up behind the ridge of ice and can work its way under shingles. Common sources of attic heat include thin or uneven insulation, air leaks around recessed lights, plumbing stacks, chimneys and attic hatches, and bathroom or kitchen fans that vent into the attic instead of outside. Valleys, dormers and low-slope sections collect more snow and drain more slowly, so they are more prone to damming.

Know the signs of an aging roof. The company points homeowners to four common indicators: roof age (most roofs last 20 to 30 years depending on materials and installation), curling or missing shingles, active leaks or water stains on a ceiling or wall, and heavy granule loss in the gutters. One or two of these can often be repaired. Several at once, or a roof near the end of its life, usually points toward replacement. RTP Roofing says that call should be made on the roof itself, not from the driveway.

Mind the season if replacement is needed. The company's guide on timing notes that shingles are made to be installed in mild weather and that cold temperatures can slow how shingle sealant strips bond. Spring, summer and fall are easier, and winter work is possible but asks more of the crew and the materials.

Look at the credentials before signing. RTP Roofing is registered in Rhode Island under GC-47694 and is GAF Master Elite certified, Certificate number 1111816. It is BBB A+ rated and accredited. Homeowners can confirm the GAF certification on GAF's own contractor locator.
